Guy time

It’s loud in the locker room:
guys talking about their girls,
or the ones they want.

My ears are safe in the sauna.
I listen as four men sit and talk
of the pills they take, their doctors’ diagnoses,
and the two drinks a night OK'd by recent
research that could be reversed some tomorrow
they may never see.

One talks of dry skin, one sebaceous zits,
another a patch as hard as horn
that gets carved off regularly. All say they pee
several times a night, and desserts are out,
no good for a slow metabolism
or sugar problems.
When number four complains of his bunions
the one hard of hearing says,
“Can’t blame you. Never can stand it
when my wife cooks onions.”

Then they drift to the day at golf,
gardening, time with the grand kids.
They skirt talk of dementia, their wives,
the errands they must run
before returning home,
or if ever they were really happy.
In the sauna you settle
for what you’ve been served
and quietly cook a bit
