Here I stand
It is most important to keep your feet on the ground.
It’s all you’ve got for support or to move forward with.
My work is all about keeping my feet on the ground.
If this at times makes me a bit of a plodder, it also affords me a solid perch
from which to leap. The trick is to land in the right place, safely, upright, and,
if precariously, have another leap left to swiftly launch again.
This brings to mind the time I was a helicopter and hovering and somehow
the updraft of my main rotor funneled another “o” up in front
and I started to suck up all sorts of debris and cleaned out
a number of floors of Macy’s before I knew what hit me. The ultimate shoplift:
don’t you know, brushes, pens, watches came into my bag, and loose change so heavy
it couldn’t jangle and very nearly tore holes.
All of it really brought me down to where I could see my feet back on the ground.
Wow, that was a close one but I did relearn something animal science has long known:
it’s tough to fly in a vacuum.
