Saving the roses

In a closed room watching TV —
but I don’t remember where or when
it was shot and I can’t find it,
the film, voiceover, subtitles,
of the open-pit gold mine in South America,
where dragged deeper crawling over one another
so up’s not out, miner after miner climbs
through miner’s shit to discard debris.

Then this morning on the sidewalk
a bug I can’t name, copper-green, bottoms-up,
and I’m back to my brother’s hunt for Japanese beetles.
The only one on the block to hunt,
he would never end the beetle onslaught.
Placed in a bottle, beetle climbs over beetle
to find a way away from beetle shit
and lighter-fluid. The one who holds the jar
watches his world writhe, waits, strikes a match.

When my father
