With me. Watch me
You are with me in my studio, watching;
at work in the studio with the model;
in the studio with people met in my travels,
people who have taught me or cared for me.
I remember on what part of the page it is written. I can tell
who in the room is your brother or sister or mother but not why you compete. I can describe the clothes or jewelry worn at the party but,
having met them only once, may not remember the name of the wearer.
In the sky, miles away, I see the hawk fly. I see the small bird on the branch full with leaves. Any change in pattern I notice, subtle changes
in color, tone, or contrast are apparent.
I am retinal. I never slight the part my eyes play.
For me it is, always was, about people. When I found I was an artist,
I found medieval and renaissance art. See, there is light everywhere.
Look at tonality, the red underpainting, the figures as shapes of color,
the line, the composition; energy everywhere. View stained glass windows. You can float a figure, if there is structure.
I am a contemporary American realist figurative painter. All I've observed and learned from dead European artists, from modern art, from abstract art, and from American art is part of my art. The visual leads me forward.
I make images, pictures, and there there is a future.
