Balcony (after Manet)
oil/liquin on linen, 45” x 30”, 2006
The Balcony, by Manet, is a painting of three people on a small balcony with green metal work. The people, two women and a man, are dressed in late 19th century costume. I’ve always seen this as a record of how we are all captives of our time and situation. I saw the men above as we ended our month trekking in Nepal and immediately thought of the Manet painting.
